One behind the bed and another to the left in the washroom. Go out and move ahead and be prepared before you head into the next room to the right since there are two enemies. Move into the room ahead and you can pick up a painkiller from the shower. Go into the first room to the right and behind the desk on the geound is a clue – DAPHNE's PASSPORT. Examine the newspaper on the table farthest to the right and also the section of the wall they were prying for two clues. Shoot dodge and kill them and another moves in from the left. If you make it far enough into the room above, when you regain control of Max you can engage bullet time and shoot the gangsters that have by now come up the stairs.Max gets behind a cushion for cover and there are three guys ahead prying the wall. The thugs will be well up the stairs and pretty much into the room by the time the cutscene ends, and if they had a clear shot at you on the way up they will kill you before the cutscene ends and you are handed back control of Max.
If you get stuck or do not go far enough, you will get shot.
You have about 3 seconds to turn back up the stairs and run up and to the right, and (and this is important) well into the room above (the room you were in before you went down the stairs). This is very uncomfortable because you have played the game until now from a first person viewpoint.
Moving the mouse left and right turns you, and pressing W will walk you forward. Immediately as the cutscene starts, you are still in control of Max, but it's from a weird third person viewpoint. as you walk down the stairs (past the immobilised boss) a cutscene will start where the boss orders his thugs to kill you. Just to try to make these instructions more clear. An update from 2020 playing this game, your mileage may vary.
